April 19th, 2011
The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services is very pleased with today’s provincial budget. An extra 1.4 million was announced to purchase fire trucks which brings to 3.9 million dollars of cost shared funding available for 2011-12. This will help fund approximately 20-24 new fire trucks for fire departments throughout Newfoundland and Labrador
Additionally, a new provincial volunteer firefighter tax credit mirroring the federal tax credit was announced for the provinces some 5900 volunteer firefighters. It is estimated that the tax credit will provide 231 dollars in relief to those firefighters who qualify with 200 hours of service. Newfoundland is only the second province in the country to recognize their volunteer firefighters in this manner.
President Vince MacKenzie said today that “this is a good day to be a volunteer firefighter in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Government responded to the requests of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services, and also recognized the tremendous dedication and service of the men and women of the province’s volunteer firefighters.”
“We are very please to know that our efforts did not fall on deaf ears, the provincial cabinet is to be commended for including these initiatives in this budget”.
