Firefighter Tax Credit announced

March 22nd, 2011

The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services is very pleased to report that volunteer firefighters have got the $3000 firefighter tax credit announced in the Federal budget March 22, 2011. This means a direct credit to volunteer firefighter with an approximate savings of 400 to 700 dollars for those who qualify with 200 hours in a taxation year of documented time.

The NLAFS has been active in adding the Newfoundland and Labrador voice to the lobby effort but the greater credit goes to all of you who lobbied your MP through the campaign at the givefirefighterscredit.ca.
We recognize and acknowlege the strong support given to all of our province's firefighters by the 7 Newfoundland and Labrador MP's. While they are not on the government side, we witnessed their support on this effort, helped to to drive to government to include this in the budget. The NLAFS thanks them for their contribution.

Of course the next step is the vote on the budget which is volatile and may bring the government down. We are confident that the tax credit will still be included in any new government's budget regardless as all parties have now indicated support for this issue.
